Assassination attempt

Before the sunrise, Anastasia hears Emissary Neva speaking with Lucio inside her tent:

“You did not have the guts to kill the old man you loved, but you should be able to kill this old woman you just met? Yesterday I confessed too much to her; she cannot live.”

Lucio prepares his knife and comes towards Anastasia, who is awake. Anastasia is able to avoid being stabbed a few times, but she cannot gain an exit from the tent.

Kuno, MarenThread! The Anabaptists are trying to kill me.”

Lucio drops his knife when he sees the others coming. He is being tied up when they hear the Romanos.

“Someone killed Papa Chico! No one leaves the camp!”

Only now does Maren notice how sick she feels. It is like a heavy hangover or a fever. Everyone else is tired, but not like her.

Investigations

The Romanos commence the investigation and post guards at the camp entrance. They notice the young Nero is missing. The gun to pair with the bullets is not found; Kuno hid it under the bedrolls.

Anastasia tries to convince Lucio to tell her what he knows. But the old Cossack is hit by the Anabaptist’s head instead. Her nose is completely broken.

The hours pass, and the investigation does not seem to be too serious. Papa Chicco’s grave is dug, but the camp leader is buried without ceremony.

Too many flies are around everyone. It is Thread who sees for a fraction of a second, in the midst of their flying, the Purgarean chakra pattern in the air. He informs the others. Maren now knows she is infected - it can still be dealt with, but she cannot wait.

Returning to Lucatore

Thread has an idea, and they plant the gun in Lucio’s things. The Romanos eventually find it, and the Anabaptist Furor is now blamed. The others are allowed to leave the camp and take the two hurt women: Anastasia and the Emissary.

Just before dusk, they travel back to Lucatore. On their way, Neva confesses again: She paid Papa Chicco to kill the Baptist. Altair, with the help of Carmino Ferro would have Vikal killed, instead of helping her boy.

Seeing the valley of Lucatore ahead, the group notices two torchlight processions walking towards each other from the east and west. At their pace, they will meet in front of House Benesato.
